As a top-rated Google search marketing firm, Autumn Consulting wants to understand how the latest marketing trends may impact our client’s bottom line.
That’s why we’ve decided to test out some popular AI platforms to see what they have to offer.
In this article, we explore some of our most interesting findings with a technology called Midjourney, a text-to-image generative AI software.
Before we begin, let’s dig a little deeper into generative AI and explore why these tools have become so popular.
What You Need To Know About The Generative AI Boom
Artificial intelligence is a unique type of code designed to perform tasks that normally require human ability.
While AI has been gaining recent popularity in newsfeeds and social media posts, AI technologies have been present in modern life for the last several decades!
The most popular AIs in use today are large language models like ChatGPT and Google Bard. These technologies are trained with large text databases that allow them to produce new and creative results.
AI in marketing is now a 15.84 billion dollar trend, with thousands of companies hopping onto the bandwagon. However, the jury’s still out on whether it’s a solid investment or even a sustainable tool for brands that want to take a DIY approach.
Now, let’s take a closer look at Midjourney generative AI and explore whether or not it’s worthwhile for modern marketing strategies.
Let’s Take A Closer Look At Midjourney
While ChatGPT and Google Bard are able to produce some impressive text-based responses, Midjourney takes a different approach by creating realistic images from user prompts. The platform may still be in beta, but it has already been used by a variety of businesses to create marketing materials, product designs, and more.
We decided to put Midjourney to the test by seeing whether or not it could generate passable stock photography.
Here are some prompts that produced impressive results.
“Stock photo of a construction worker with a construction hat and a measuring tape smiling and working on a roof”
“Stock photo of a young ethnic woman smiling holding a sleeping infant in her arms. The woman is surrounded by an elderly couple who are smiling and looking down lovingly at the woman and her baby”
At first glance, these results are absolutely stunning! But as we start to dive deeper, you may start to notice some rather bizarre errors.
Take, for example, another variation of the above prompt:
Errors like these are called ‘hallucinations,’ which are fairly common issues with budding image-based models. Midjourney is known to generate odd-looking or even malformed appendages, as the nuances of human hands or feet are difficult to replicate with AI.
You can see an even more disturbing image when you ask AI to generate human faces:
“Stock photo of a business meeting of a large corporation, everyone is well dressed, high definition, individuals are laughing and smiling and taking notes”
Again, you can see how AI struggles to depict ‘natural’ looking features due to its limited knowledge of the human form. This may eventually repair itself with time and training data, but for now, it remains a serious obstacle for growing businesses looking to ramp their marketing strategies.
Reliable and Innovative Marketing with Autumn
While image-based artificial intelligence provides some level of interest to marketers, the current limitations of this technology are underwhelming in professional applications.
